Clopton has over twenty years of experience in the game of fastpitch softball, and has established a
highly successful track record of performance and development at multiple levels, and in multiple areas.
At the collegiate level, Clopton served as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of
Kansas and Marshall University, where he coached numerous all-conference pitchers, three draft picks,
two All-Americans, one Big XII Freshman of the Year, and one Big XII Player of the Year. Most recently,
Clopton spent the 2023 season as the hitting coach at Indiana University where the Hoosiers set
numerous offensive records while experiencing unmatched success at the plate. In one year, Hoosier
hitters saw a 13% increase in batting average (.322), a 29% increase in home runs (72), and a 52%
increase in rbi’s (353). The Hoosiers led the Big Ten Conference average, hits, runs, doubles, home runs,
rbi’s, and walks – and were second in stolen bases. Individually, the Hoosiers produced the top two
hitters in the conference, five players of the week, and six freshmen of the week.
Prior to this, Clopton spent three years coaching in the club level achieving a top five and top ten
national ranking in two of the three years. As a pitching instructor, he coached four Gatorade POY award
winnings from 2019-2020, and had pitchers earn scholarships to schools in the ACC, SEC, Big XII, PAC-12,
and more. As a hitting instructor, his athletes would go on to schools in the SEC, Big Ten, Big XII, PAC-12,
and more. Clopton’s hitting instruction is cutting edge and at the forefront of today’s hitting
conversation, maintaining professional certifications through OnBaseU, Rapsodo, and Blast technology.
In the private sector, Clopton formerly co-owned Team Performance, LLC, a leading indoor
baseball/softball development facility in the Midwest. In addition to overseeing pitching and hitting
development, he co-managed daily operations and served as its Chief Financial Officer. Incorporated
technology included HitTrax, Rapsodo, Diamond Kinetics, Blast, and DartFish.
Away from the game, Clopton was a college professor at the University of Kansas, Marshall University,
and Louisiana State University from 2006-2022 and published over 50 refereed articles and 30 research
abstracts, while conducting over 100 national or international research presentations. Clopton also
served nine years in the US Army/Kansas Army National Guard as a field artillery officer, including stops
as a battalion logistics officer and fire support officer. This included managing fires intelligence and
leading a task unit with Joint Special Operations Task Force – Arabian Peninsula working under SEAL
Team 3 from 2018-2019.
Clopton also has B.S.E, M.S.E., and PhD (organizational management) from The University of Kansas.
